Energy storage involves converting energy from forms that are difficult to store (electricity, kinetic energy, etc.) to more conveniently or economically storable forms. Some technologies provide only short-term energy storage, and others can be very long-term such as power to gas using hydrogen or methane and the storage of heat or cold between opposing seasons in deep aquifers or bedrock.
Lithium-ion batteries power many modern devices from cell phones, to cars, laptops, and a multitude of portable electronics. But their power density is less than ideal. And there appears to be another, perhaps more promising energy storage option on the horizon: lithium-sulfur batteries.
Lithium-sulfur batteries use cheaper materials than lithium-ion, they
Washington, D.C. – This week, hundreds of organizations are honoring the past accomplishments and focusing on the future growth of America’s national infrastructure during Infrastructure Week (May 15-19). With diesel equipment serving as the overwhelming power source for past and future infrastructure growth, Diesel Technology Forum Executive Director Allen Schaeffer
The technology group Wärtsilä today announced new hybrid power plants, engines+storage and energy storage solutions to power markets globally. These new and innovative solutions provide Wärtsilä’s existing and future customers added value by utilizing energy storage technology together with traditional engine based power generation. Wärtsilä also announced it would be
What will the energy landscape of the future look like? Will there be a shift toward more efficient generation sources? What changes will we see in energy configurations?
The energy industry is currently amidst the most significant transformation that it has ever experienced—a metamorphosis that requires the reevaluation and reconfiguration of
ESNA 2017 to recognize projects accelerating transition towards grid of the future
Energy Storage North America (ESNA) has issued a call for nominations for the 2017 ESNA Innovation Awards. The Innovation Awards are presented annually for excellence and impact in energy storage. This year, ESNA will honor projects that are
The Digi-RTU modulates the capacity of rooftop units and air/water source heat pumps to match the dynamic nature of building cooling or heating loads. As a result, energy waste is minimized and indoor comfort is improved. Because of its unique operating principles, the Digi-RTU achieves greater savings than any other
For commercial, industrial, and institutional power consumers with a heightened need for affordable, reliable, and resilient power supply, advanced microgrids can provide not only control over power sources and energy costs, but also “green” energy and peace of mind. Microgrids employ a wide range of onsite generation resources, along with

Jason Coughlin, a solar analyst at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, was coauthor of a 2011 report, “Solar Schools Assessment and Implementation Project: Financing Options for Solar Installations on K–12 Schools.”
“Schools have continued to install solar using power purchase agreements (PPAs) and the trend is to continue seeing third-party installations,” says Coughlin.
