Corica Park South Course recognized for sustainable efforts and focus on water efficiency

Feb. 20, 2019, NEW YORK— Ewing Irrigation & Landscape Supply and Audubon International presented the inaugural Water & Sustainability Innovation Award to Corica Park South Course of Alameda, California and its management firm, Greenway Golf, on Feb. 18, 2019. The Water & Sustainability Innovation Award is a new opportunity created by Ewing and Audubon International to recognize landscape companies, organizations and municipalities for sustainable, water efficient projects.

“We developed the Water & Sustainability Innovation Award to bring focus to the increasingly prevalent water challenges we are facing. We know that many companies and organizations are already serving as leaders in sustainable practices throughout the country and we now have an award to honor the example and work they are doing,” said Warren Gorowitz, Ewing Vice President of Sustainability.

The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago is seeking a visionary Executive Director. The District is an award-winning wastewater agency which has been a leader in protecting the Chicago area water environment for over a 120 years. This new award recognizes a project that addresses sustainability and water efficiency challenges, as well as contributes to a healthy environment, equity (quality of life) or a vital economy. The Corica Park South Course project did all of this and more.

Greenway Golf’s team used creative, multi-faceted, cost-effective approaches to take a municipally owned golf course to the forefront of sustainable property management. As a result, the property has significantly reduced its water use, improved stormwater management and reduced both its energy use and carbon emissions. Additionally, the team introduced native plants and landscaping features to improve the habitat for many species of wildlife.

“I was excited to see the thorough and thoughtful approach to this renovation at Corica Park. Greenway Golf’s work is a terrific example of designing sustainability into a project from beginning to end,” says Christine Kane, CEO at Audubon International, an environmental organization that is a leader in education, technical assistance and certifications in sustainability for businesses, recreational properties and communities around the world.

The launch of the Water & Sustainability Innovation Award was successful, with several distinctive project entries from around the country. While Corica Park stood out as the award recipient, the judges determined there were two other projects worthy of recognition as Awards of Distinction. Jovial Gardens and Katella High school were recognized for their recent sustainable projects.
Additionally, the judges recommended modifying the Water & Sustainability Innovation Award for 2020, adding new categories to better serve and honor the amazing projects leading sustainability efforts around the country. As nominations are open again this summer, the award will incorporate the judges’ recommendations and introduce additional entry categories.
